The Suffolk Farming & Wildlife
Advisory Group (FWAG) to present winners with the 2007 Farm Conservation Cup.
On 17 October, Richard Wrinch
of Hill House
Farm,
will be presented with the 2007 Kerr Conservation Cup for his excellent work in
promoting the strong environmental and conservation aspects he has developed on
his farm.
The prestigious competition, sponsored
by Ashton Graham Solicitors, has been running since 1980 and is awarded to the farm
that best demonstrates the integration of conservation, resource protection and
diversification within a successful farming enterprise.
Richard, along with his wife Hazel,
farm 280 hectares overlooking the River Orwell, near Shotley. The farm is within
the Area of Outstanding Natural beauty but it was their appreciation and understanding
of the farm’s environmental features that really impressed the judges of the competition.
Threatened species like lapwing, corn bunting and corn marigold all thrive on the
farm and are encouraged to do so by the farming techniques Richard and Hazel employ.
Their enthusiasm also means that
guests at their busy B&B are encouraged to enjoy the farm, its wildlife and
the surrounding countryside.
Chris Knock and his family, from
Manor Farm, Battisford, were runners-up in the 2007 competition.
The judges, who announced the result
earlier in the summer, were Julian Roughton, Chief Executive of Suffolk Wildlife
Trust and Glen Buckingham, Manager of Helmingham Estate Farms, winner of the competition
in 2006.
Jonathan Long, agricultural partner
from Ashton Graham and who will be presenting the Kerr Cup commented, "Hill House
Farm is an excellent example of a farm where the environmental issues are given
as much importance to the success of the venture as the farming ones. Richard and
Hazel are to be highly commended for their success and I’m
delighted I will personally
be able to congratulate them next week”.
The presentation evening on 17 October
is to be held at Waterfront House; the Ipswich offices of Ashton Graham, who have been sponsoring the competition since 1992. Their offices are located on Ipswich
Waterfront and offer stunning views over Ipswich Docks and the surrounding regeneration
area. If any members of Suffolk FWAG would like to attend the evening, please contact
